The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) is a premier national Institute in the country dedicated
to research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Allied Sciences & Technology. The Institute has
field stations at Kavalur & Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, Gauribidanur & Hoskote in Karnataka,
and Leh & Hanle in J&K. The Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO), the high-altitude
station of IIA, situated at Hanle at an altitude of 4500 metres above mean sea level. IAO
currently has a 2-M Optical and Infrared Telescope, the Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT),
that is remotely operated via a dedicated Satellite link from IIA's field station, the Centre for
Research and Education in Science and Technology (CREST), located at Hoskote, a suburb of
Bangalore, situated 45 km in East along NH14.
Applications are invited from bright, young and highly motivated individuals for the following
position:
Name of the post: TELESCOPE TRAINEE

Qualification:
a) Essential: B.Sc. Passed with subjects Physics and Mathematics with
minimum 60% marks in aggregate, and in both subjects.
b) Desirable: Knowledge of computer programming
Age limit: Below 25 years
Tenure of appointment: Initially for one year and extendable by two more years,
subject to satisfactory performance.
Consolidated Salary (inclusive of all): 18,000/- per month with an annual increment
of Rs.1000/-.
Place of Posting: CREST Campus, Hoskote, Bangalore
Job requirement: Support to Guest astronomers observing with the Himalayan
Chandra Telescope using the remote observing facility at
CREST. The job involves working through 10 nights in each
month, and other support activities and training during the
remaining days.
Terms & Conditions:
1) The Trainee / Fellowship programme is not a regular employment and does not entitle any privileges or benefits
of regular employment. It is only a temporary programme for imparting training.
2) The date for determining the upper age limit, qualifications and experience shall be the closing date prescribed
for receipt of completed applications.
3) Age relaxation is permissible to SC/ST/OBC candidates and also physically handicapped candidates as notified
by the Govt. of India from time to time.
4) Outstation candidates called for interview will be reimbursed to and fro train / bus fare by the shortest route
limited to Non-AC sleeper class railway fare on production of original tickets.
5) The prescribed educational qualifications are minimum required and mere possession of the same does not
entitle candidates to be called for interview. Where the number of applications received in response to the
advertisement is large and it will not be convenient or possible for the Institute to interview all those candidates,
the Institute has the right to limit the candidates to be called for interview on the basis of qualifications and
experience higher than the minimum prescribed in the advertisement. The Institute also reserves right to call for
interview only those candidates who in its assessment are likely to be more suitable.
6) The Institute reserves the right to cancel the entire recruitment process at any time without assigning any reasons
whatsoever.
7) No correspondence will be entertained with the candidates not selected for interview / appointment.
